We've talked in the past, such as with
this Season 4 news, about the various music soundtrack changes that occur with
Dawson's Creek DVD releases compared to their original airings (including a change to the theme song in the past couple of season sets...this is an ongoing issue for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (formerly Columbia/Tristar), who's also making changes to theme songs in upcoming
Tour of Duty and
Married...with Children season sets).
As the ugly monster of music rights issues seems to affect
Dawson's Creek quite a bit, there is a valuable resource for fans who want to know more about the various music substitutions on the DVDs.
The Dawson's Creek Music Guide website bills itself as "the official music resource for the show," and has a section which covers all music subs on the digital home video sets. For example, the 1st Season episode "Double Date" had Melissa Etheridge's famous song "I'm The Only One" in the original broadcast, but the same scene on DVDs sported a Bryan Adams song instead. This site is a wealth of info about the changes, and we highly recommend you give it a visit!
Now there's even more reason to be grateful to DawsonsCreekMusic.com: they have a heads-up on the DVD releases of the final two seasons of the show. On the site's main page is a little "News & Notes" area in the top right corner that reads, "
Season 5 is due to be released early 2005. ":
As you can see, the headline of that blurb also mentions the 6th season, but the copy underneath fails to talk about it. Never fear, because
their DVD page goes on to say that, "
Season 5 and 6 DVD sets are both due out by the first half of 2005. "
That's great to know, and we thank the folks at this website for the heads-up...and to reader Lana Adele for letting us know that this would be found there. We could be looking at late February/early March for the 5th season, and if the 6th season does make it out before the first half of the year is over, it will probably be right near the end of June. That's assuming that Sony's timetables hold up...as we all know, long-range plans like these are extrememly subject to change.
If the release timeframe for the 5th season IS in late February, then we could be just weeks away from Sony's official announce date for the set. Stay tuned, and we'll let you know!
