A week ago we
reported that Celebrity Video Distribution (CVD) would release
Davey and Goliath - The Lost Episodes on DVD, coming out on
April 7th. At the time we had gotten the DVD cover art from CVD's website, and it turned out to be a familiar-looking graphic. The disc was originally supposed to be released by Starlight Entertainment (who previously had issued other
D&G titles) in September 2006. It was delayed multiple times, and
our news story about the first delay (to December 2006) included a first look at Starlight's cover art. The CVD website's initial cover art for their version of this release had been identical. However, they've now changed it up!
CVD's new cover art, seen both at their website and at the Amazon pre-order listing (see button link below, followed by the new artwork), uses the same key art ("statues" of the characters seen on labeled pedestals, standing over a hole dug in the ground to apparently bury a dog bone seen to the right, but instead unearthing some film reels laying against the mound of earth on the left). Instead of blue sky and trees in the background above, though, the new art has autumn leaves at the top, decorating a "torn hole"-style border that frames the key art. The main title over the leaves takes a different approach than the "rubber stamp" look seen before with
The Lost Episodes wording. And at the bottom we see that this is now marked as a "
Collector's Edition", with wording advising us that this is "available to the public for the first time ever!"
While CVD hasn't contacted us directly about this release, it's our assumption that they added the latter wording to the cover as a way of clearing up something we brought up in our last report. It seems to be their way of making sure consumers know that the previous licensee, Starlight, never did make this title available to the market, which is what we've been told by several hard-core
D&G fans after posting our last story. On the other hand, it's worth noting that several of these same fans have expressed regret that Starlight was planning to offer the title at a $16.99 SRP, and that CVD is instead planning to sell
Davey and Goliath - The Lost Episodes: Collector's Edition at $24.99 SRP, with apparently the same content.
We're mainly bringing up the pricing here to let concerned fans know that we are aware of the difference, and that there's no need to continue to inform us. In CVD's defense, it should probably be pointed out that the pricing difference could possibly have had something to do with the reasons why Starlight never put the product out in the first place, despite multiple delays that ended with a never-delivered street date in September 2007. For instance, consider that perhaps the remastering of these episodes cost more than Starlight planned for. Other factors could also come into play here. In any case, we're pretty sure that the property owners of
Davey & Goliath, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, are doing their best to make sure that the show's new home video rights licensees (CVD) are charging a fair price for this title. If either CVD or the ELCA have anything that they would like us to pass along to fans about this item, we would of course welcome their e-mails!
Without further ado, here's a look at the revised cover art for
Davey and Goliath - The Lost Episodes: Collector's Edition. Our thanks to reader Ken Webster for letting us know that Amazon had the new picture there:
