Darkwing Duck - I am the terror that flaps in the night! I am Darkwing Duck on DVD!

Posted by David Lambert
Yesterday we teased TVShowsOnDVD readers in our Home Improvement story by mentioning that we had news - which we were saving for today - from our industry sources about a pair of animated Disney TV-DVDs in the works. This info comes from the same *very* reliable source that has provided info to us in the past, including our scoop this past Christmas Day that Jim Henson's Dinosaurs would soon be announced for DVD (which of course it was).

Let's get dangerous! Darkwing Duck, the popular 1991 series that started its first season in daily syndication and then found a network home on ABC (airing weekly in the remaining two seasons) is coming to DVD in 2006

Darkwing Duck is voiced by Jim Cummings, who is also known for voicing Winnie The Pooh (and Tigger, too!) among dozens of Disney characters, and whose voice has also appeared as the narrator in Animaniacs, the title character in Bonkers, as bad guys in the original TMNT, Sonic The Hedgehog and Captain Planet, and played several roles in Transformers.

Other Transformers veterans also voice roles in Darkwing Duck, including Frank Welker, Jack Angel and Michael Bell. Linda Gary of He-Man and She-Ra fame voices in this show, as do Simpsons stars Dan Castellaneta (playing MegaVolt...don't call him "Sparky"!) and Marcia Wallace. Dexter's Lab title role voice star Christine Cavanaugh is here as well. Other familiar voice actors also show up (Jess Harnell, Lorenzo Music, Terry McGovern, Katie Leigh and Kenneth Mars among them), as do many names you'll recognize from live-action television or film: Phil Hartman, Tim Curry, Roddy McDowall, Jonathan Harris, Robert Ito, and Allyce Beasley.

There were roughly 90 episodes of Darkwing Duck, including the double-length pilot episode "Darkly Dawns the Duck." Our industry sources indicate that Disney will probably release these in multi-DVD sets, similar to DuckTales and Rescue Rangers releases last year. A release date has not been set, and anything can change to delay or scrap their current plans. But if things hold, we'll see the set before 2006 is over, and probably released side-by-side with another Disney DVD animated TV show. What could that be? How about The Tick?

It will probably be a while before Disney makes this info official. Stay tuned for further info and developments, which we'll bring to you just as soon as we can.
