Over the weekend, one of our friends at MPI Home Video saw our Saturday news post
about a possible retail store release of Dark Shadows -The Beginning, Vol. 1: Episodes 1 - 35
on August 28th
. He e-mailed us to confirm that these are coming to retail approximately 6 months after each one is released to members of the Dark Shadows DVD Club. He points out that members of the club not only get them quicker, but at a special rate, with a free DVD set if you purchase all 6 this year. He says that so far 3 sets of the Dark Shadows - The Beginning
collections have been released that way. For those of you not in-the-know about what these are, here's further info he provided:
The 209 pre-Barnabas Collins episodes are being released on 6 separate 4-disc DVD sets by MPI under the title "Dark Shadows - The Beginning." These early black-and-white episodes were never re-aired in syndication, though did appear on VHS from MPI in the 1990s and were shown on the Sci-Fi Channel.
The MPI DVD releases for these include the original production slate prior to each episode plus original ABC-TV voice-over promos and announcements during the closing credits. Each set also has exclusive and new bonus interviews with cast and production personnel, plus other material such as introductions and background on the show by actresses Alexandra Moltke (governess Victoria Winters)and Kathryn Leigh Scott (waitress Maggie Evans).
In additional to film star of the 1930s-1950s Joan Bennett portraying matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, the early Dark Shadows episodes star Louis Edmonds (Langley from "All My Children") as her brother Roger and Mitchell Ryan ("Dharma & Greg") as Burke Devlin.
Also, on Collection 1 - episode 1 can be viewed with all the original June 27, 1966 commercials as aired on ABC-TV.
Our thanks for all of that info! We can't express enough gratitude for our contact going out of his way to provide this much help, and artwork! Although the cover art for the first volume of Dark Shadows - The Beginning
wasn't handy, he sent over front and rear cover art for the second volume (Dark Shadows -The Beginning, Vol. 2: Episodes 36 - 70
), which you'll see below. We don't have the retail release date for that yet, but as we said it's available now to members of MPI's Dark Shadows DVD Club. Stay tuned because we hope to have the first volume artwork within the next day or two, okay?
