Dark Shadows - Revival Series Rises For October Fright-Fest!

Posted by David Lambert
We weren't planning on talking about this until Monday, but has broken the news with their pre-release listing for Dark Shadows - The Complete Revival Series! Barnabas is back, played by Chariots of Fire star Ben Cross, in a 3-DVD set from MGM. List price is $39.95, but DVDPlanet is selling it for just $27.97. The release is on October 18th, just in time for Halloween fun! We'll have more information about the DVD release itself next week, when Sony/MGM officially announces the set.

For those of you who need reminding, this remake series came from Dan Curtis, the man behind the original '60s version of the show. There were only 13 episodes made (including the 1990 pilot) before the show was cancelled. What went wrong? Bad timing: the show's regular broadcast debut was around the same time in January, 1991 that the U.S. Gulf War started! The show got knocked off the airwaves in most markets, in favor of news updates about Operation Desert Storm.

Despite the show's short life, it made remarkable progress quickly along the trail of the plotlines from the original series (we won't spoil the story for those who have never seen it, though, so no descriptions of that!). Besides Cross, the show featured standout actors and actresses, both on a regular basis and as guest stars. Names that you'll probably recognize (or at least you would recognize where you should know them from) are Lysette Anthony (Krull) as "Angeliqué," Joanna Going (Dean Koontz's Phantoms, Into The West) as "Victoria Winters" and "Josette," Roy Thinnes (The Invaders, Falcon Crest as "Roger Collins" and "Rev. Trask," Jean Simmons (Spartacus, North and South) as "Elizabeth Collins Stoddard" and "Naomi," Apollo Dukakis (brother of Olympia and Cousin of Gov. Michael Dukakis) as "Rev. Amos," and Adrian Paul (War of the Worlds: The Series, Highlander: The Series as "Jeremiah Collins."
