There have been
a few DVD titles released in the past for North America in regard to the classic British program
Coronation Street. Now the folks at BFS Entertainment are almost ready with an
April 12th release next week of a 2-disc set called
The Road to Coronation Street. The first disc is actually a telefilm that gives fans a dramatized look at how the show got made in the first place...and almost didn't!
The Road to Coronation Street is the dramatized story of how Coronation Street, Britain's best-loved series, was created - and how it almost never made it on air. Set in Manchester's Granada TV Studios circa 1960, passionate young scriptwriter Tony Warren had a vision of bringing to life a program about real people and everyday situations on the streets of working-class Manchester. Portraying Tony's boardroom battles to convince network executives that his idea for a dramatic series would be both popular and commercially successful - and the gamble executives took to bring this show to the screen - this film marks the milestone 50 Year Anniversary of Coronation Street.
Usually we wouldn't cover such a release, actually, because it's a "single-episode" 100-minute TV movie, and while it might be about a television show, it isn't actually part of that show's run or continuity. However, the bonus 2nd DVD in this set is what qualifies this title to be covered at our site: that disc is "
Coronation Street - The Beginning," a remastered copy of the very first episode of the show, as broadcast for 25 minutes in black and white on December 9, 1960! That's something any fan of this program would want in their DVD collection. The cost for the entire set is $29.98 SRP, but you can get it from Amazon.com at a discount using the button link provided here, along with the cover art:
