Click and Clack's As the Wrench Turns - The 'Car Talk with Tom & Ray' Guys get a PBS Series: Debuts On-Air in July, to DVD in Sept.

The first-ever animated primetime show on PBS will help you with all sorts of auto advice

Posted by David Lambert
For 30 years Tom and Ray Magliozzi having been dispensing no-nonsense - albeit with their own brand of fun and humor! - automotive advice on their radio show "Car Talk." Tom & Ray, also known as "The Tappet Brothers" and/or "Click and Clack," have had their advice dispensed on their National Public Radio (NPR) show, syndicated as a newspaper column, and earlier this year it was announced that they are getting their own TV series, too! It will be an animated, fictionalized adaptation consisting of 10 half-hour episodes, airing on PBS (incidentally, it's to be the first-ever animated show to air in primetime on PBS). This sitcom takes off from the hit NPR show and follows the on- and off-air escapades of the duo as they try to fix cars, fend off disgruntled customers and seek out increasingly creative ways to goof off.

Tom and Ray will, of course, be the starring voices in these episodes, which takes place in the fictional Car Talk Plaza garage, where the animated Click and Clack brothers hold their advice-giving radio show "within the show," while their producer Beth tries to get them to goof off a bit less and act more professional. Fidel, Crusty, Stash, Sally ("Sal") and ZuZu the dog round out the regular cast of characters. Longtime Car Talk producer Doug Berman is the head writer on this program, with Tom Minton (Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures) also working on the scripts. Both Berman and Minton are Peabody Award winners. Another legendary name associated with the project is Tom Sito, the director of animation on this series. Sito is a veteran of such shows and films as the original He-Man, She-Ra, Bravestarr, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, Aladdin, The Lion King, Shrek and more.

Click and Clack's As the Wrench Turns early box art thumbnailThe show title, suggested by a Car Talk listener, will be called "Click and Clack's As the Wrench Turns." On-air broadcasts begin on July 9th, and PBS has already announced through Paramount Home Entertainment that the show will be getting a DVD release on September 30th. All 10 episodes, running 300 minutes, will be included on 2 discs. Tentative plans are to possibly include a "Distracted Driving Quiz & Facts" booklet, but that hasn't been finalized yet. Nor has package art, so we've got a small look at that for you here. Stay tuned and we'll have a larger look at it, along with any updates, when they become available.
