Back in March we posted
a release listing here at TVShowsOnDVD, showing that A&E Home Video's general DVD release of
The Top Chef - The Complete Season 6: Las Vegas would be available starting August 24th, per a pre-order listing at Amazon.com (see the button link below). With that date rapidly approaching, though, it came to our attention that Amazon had removed this street date from their entry, now simply saying that "
This title has not yet been released. You may pre-order it now and we will deliver it to you when it arrives."
The delay for this general release of the set is probably contractual. The title, among other DVD sets for shows that air on Bravo, is currently available for an exclusive window of time at a particular big-name retailer, before it becomes available everywhere else. Gord and I don't particularly like this practice; we feel strongly that it's a problem-causing situation. And one that's *completely* different from an exclusive release such as those at - for example - the Shout! Select program, the WBShop/Warner Archive program, and the Amazon CreateSpace program: these are instances where the titles involved are ones that other retailers don't *want* to carry, so these programs are actually rescuing the DVD release of the indicated shows from limbo for the passionate fans who want them. On the other hand, the "windowed exclusives" (like this one seems to be) is simply a profit-and-promotion gimmick, forcing consumers to visit a particular retailer at the expense of others. In these cases, we're not going to help with promoting that situation, no matter who the retailer is (which is why we didn't name the
Top Chef/Bravo one above...and you probably all know who it is, anyway). Instead we'll just wait to publish the general "wide" retail release date. If we do end up talking about a windowed exclusive of that type, then it's generally because we misreported it, and/or we're correcting an earlier report (like we're doing now with
The Complete Season 6: Las Vegas).
Below is the cover art, along with the Amazon button link that you can use to pre-purchase a copy of the set for when it does begin shipping "wide." Stay tuned and we'll bring you that new general street date, as soon as it's available.
