As we all know, "Tuesday" is traditionally the weekday that DVDs are released in the United States, if they are released through traditional retailers including the so-called "brick and mortar" stores (physical retail stores, as opposed to direct-sales online). Few exceptions are made, and for TV-on-DVD releases, there were practically no exceptions to that until this past year's holiday season, when the post-Christmas week had a lot of expected customer traffic on Monday Dec. 26th, as stores started their after-the-holiday sales. So most studios (including Sony) moved their release dates from Tuesday the 27th to Monday the 26th, so as not to miss all those customer eyeballs spying their new products. Holidays are special, after all.
Is the USA's 4th of July holiday as special from a retail standpoint? Maybe. Although Sony hasn't made their official announcement yet,
Amazon.com has just added a pre-order listing for
Charlie's Angels - The Complete 3rd Season on DVD. The date on this listing is for
July 3rd...a Monday.
It doesn't take a big stretch of the imagination to understand why Sony might choose to do this: with the Independence Day holiday falling on a Tuesday this year, stores will be closed while employees join customers in their Summer relaxation in backyards, parks, and at the beaches. And presumably the stores will be running various promotions on Sunday and Monday of that week in order to catch the customers' interest. So this may just be the first of many DVD releases that week to shift to a Monday release date.
