After yesterday's
news post with info from
Cagney & Lacey Producer (and husband of show star Sharon Gless) Barney Rosenzweig, giving the reasons why the planned
May 8th DVD release was pulled, you'll be glad to know that the package is back on, and on the original schedule as well! The good news came from Barney himself,
posted at his blog just a day after his original scathing message (which has since been taken down). Barney says:
The latest battle in the Cagney & Lacey narrative is over. Who won? We all did. Less than 19 hours after the posting of our last blog, MGM and I have reached a happy agreement that the DVD package, put together so diligently by the new FOX/MGM team, will be ready for release in the USA for Mothers’ Day 2007 as originally planned.
He goes on to thank the fans who stepped up, the journalists who reported on it, and the sheer force of this thing called the Internet. He says that "
Within a half hour of the posting on the East Coast, the intercom lines between MGM and FOX were already buzzing on the West Coast. Columnists on the Internet and at various major papers, including my own Miami Herald, dropped everything to jump onto what was a pretty interesting story of a pissed off producer and some clumsy handling of interior PR by a couple of major corporations." No distinct mention was made in regard to the original reason given for the delay, music rights, but we can assume that all is now cleared up and good to go!
All's well that ends well, and we're happy that the set seems to be coming out
as originally announced. Our own thanks to all the readers who wrote in to us about this, including "Sheila" who first told us of Barney's update, Bryan Sanders with his "back on the beat" suggestion for a headline, and Al Lutz who writes, "
Wouldn't it be a good idea to note in your comments that your site is owned by TVGuide, which is part of the Murdoch company [News Corp. - Dave L.]
that also owns Fox? I know that, but your readers should be made clear on the connection. No disagreement, by the way, with your opinion on Fox; as a consumer I can vouch that MGM is much better served by them than Sony; it's just that the site connection should be made clear." Al's right, and we apologize for the oversight. Funnily enough, we're not particularly getting co-operation on DVD release materials and info from Fox Home Entertainment right now, but nevertheless the connection is there.
