near the end of last year that a blog post at VEI (Visual Entertainment Inc.) had revealed that the studio had secured the rights to release DVD sets of Cagney & Lace
, and in February we followed up
with the exclusive news that this release of Cagney & Lacey - The Complete Series
would contain all 7 seasons of the show, including the first season with Meg Foster and the original pilot with M*A*S*H
's Loretta Swit!
The original VEI blog entry from December was removed at some point, but this past month they put it back up
with just enough additional information to confirm what we've been reporting. Yesterday, show creator Barney Rosenzweig (who later on married show co-star Sharon Gless) had his say
at his own blog:
Someone...was it my mother?...dunno. Anyway...someone told me good things come to those who wait. Okay. It appears y'all have waited long enough and something good is coming your way. This year...probably no later than this fall...a limited edition of the entire Cagney & Lacey series will be made available first to readers of this website and their friends via the Internet. The package will include the original two hour film starring Loretta Swit as Cagney, the six so-called "lost episodes" with Meg Foster as Cagney and then all 119 episodes of the true series starring Sharon Gless as Cagney. Tyne Daly has always been the one and only Lacey and she is there in all 127 hours of DVD entertainment which will be complemented by some add-on interviews and possibly the British Film Institute event honoring the 30th anniversary of the series. Each of these box sets to be autographed by Sharon, Tyne...and me. More to come in the next few weeks: keep watching this website.
So to sum it up: Cagney & Lacey - The Complete Series
, with the original pilot telefilm with Tyne Daly and Loretta Swit, then the original first season with Tyne Daly and Meg Foster, and then all the remaining regular seasons starring Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless. Various extras (interviews, possibly a 30th Anniversary event with the British Film Institute), originally available online (and *possibly* sold in stores after that, but Barney makes no mention of that, and VEI hasn't told us either way yet, so this *could* end up being an online exclusive when all is said and done!). Online-sold copies to be autographed by Barney, Sharon and Tyne. Prospective release timeframe is Fall 2012
, but that isn't at all set in stone yet.
Barney posted the above-quoted piece at his blog yesterday morning, and later in the day he followed up with the below-quoted piece. It speaks to how happy he is to finally be getting this put together for the fans, and how he would love to set new sales records with this highly collectible item. And, rightly, points out how gift-able this would be to all the women in your life. We'll let Barney do the talking here, and we'll keep our eyes out for updates. Stay tuned! Our thanks to reader Paul K. Bisson (who was part of the team of experts who helped Time Life bring us the great Six Million Dollar Man
DVD set and all of its extras) for the heads-up about Barney's blog updates.
There is really no bigger piece of news than the simple announcement just past that after more than 20 years of trying, the complete Cagney & Lacey series will be put into one package of DVDs for sale as a collectable for our fans. It has been a long time coming and I am more delighted than anyone...well, almost anyone. Of course now comes the real test...just how many of the folks out there will really care and how many of these "units" will be sold by the distributor. It would be fun to see a record-breaking number. It would be delightful to point out this potential success story to a bunch of execs at MGM who have demonstrated little or no interest and to prove the nay-sayers wrong. I will wait and hope. Order as many of these packages as you can find a home for. Christmas is coming, followed by Mom's or Grandmother's birthday and, of course, Mother's Day. It will make a great gift for all the women on your list.
