In 2007, MGM first came out with this show on DVD with their 4-disc, 22-episode release of "Cagney & Lacey - The True Beginning: The Complete 1st Season Starring Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly"
($39.98 SRP). As fans of the show know, this was actually the SECOND broadcast season, skipping the pilot which had Loretta Swit (M*A*S*H
) in it as Cagney, and the six-episode first season that had Meg Foster playing the role of Lacey's partner. No, this skipped straight to the episodes where Gless took over that character, and led directly to the longtime success of the show.
As our readers have seen from previous reports, this November 13th
sees the retail in-store release from VEI of a 32-DVD package, Cagney & Lacey - The Complete Series
($139.99 SRP), a bare- bones compilation of every regular weekly episode of the 2nd through 7th broadcast seasons with Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly. For passionate fans that want bonus material (lots of it from the stars and also from show creator - and now husband to Gless! - Barney Rosenzweig), the official CagneyAndLacey.com website
will soon be offering a 38-DVD (that's the correct disc count, now confirmed with VEI) online-exclusive release titled "Cagney & Lacey - The Complete Collection: 30th Anniversary Limited Edition
" ($169.99 SRP)...complete with the Swit pilot telefilm, the six Foster episodes, and all 4 post-series reunion telefilms.
However, in these difficult economic times not every fan can afford a big set such as either of these. For fans who want to continue picking these up on a season-by-season basis, VEI has now scheduled an in-store release on November 13th
- the same date as their 32-disc Complete Series
retail set - for what they are titling as "Cagney & Lacey - Season 2
. Priced at $22.99 (in both Canada and the USA), this 2-DVD set will have all 7 episode from the VERY short third broadcast season. The reason this year's run was so short is because the show had actually been cancelled by the CBS network, but public outcry and higher ratings in reruns convinced the execs to bring it back as a late-season replacement in March 1984.
These 7 episodes - "Matinee," "A Killer's Dozen," "Victimless Crime," "The Bounty Hunter," "Baby Broker," "Partners" and "Choices." - run 343 minutes and are presented in full screen 1.33:1 video aspect ratio, with an English stereo soundtrack. Again, this 2-disc set is $22.99, and while it's not up for pre-order to U.S. residents just yet, you can pre-order it from Amazon.ca right now using the button link below. Under that is the cover art. Our thanks to VEI for kindly providing us with that image, and all the details!
