HERE's a story we've been a bit behind on: more
Cagney & Lacey releases on home video! But not on DVD, and not season sets, either. Confused? Read on!
After the show was canceled for the final time in 1988 (as longtime fans know,
C&L had the dubious honor of being canceled more than once), the stars reunited four times in 1994, '95 and '96 in post-series telefilms:
Cagney & Lacey - The Return,
Cagney & Lacey - Together Again,
Cagney & Lacey - The View Through the Glass Ceiling and
Cagney & Lacey - True Convictions.
Now it appears that all four of these productions have been included in a new home video deal, to be released in one of the high definition formats! But it's not Blu-ray Disc, or even HD DVD! No, it's in the
HD VMD format, the "third hi-def" format that kicked off this past October from New Medium Enterprises. In early November the execs at NME
talked to us about their plans to help push the format with new software deals they were planning to negotiate.
Earlier this month NME
announced a new exclusive worldwide distribution deal with SFM Entertainment LLC. The press release states that "
The deal
calls for the release of rare and classic film and TV titles never before
seen in HD on NME's Bundle Box, including...the four tele-features based upon the Emmy-winning TV series 'Cagney & Lacey.' "
Other TV Shows owned by SFM are mentioned in the press release, including
Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In and
The Joey Bishop Show, but no HD VMD plans were mentioned for those programs. However, it did say later on in the announcement text that plans were being considered for HD VMD versions of
The Real McCoys, Make Room for Daddy and Adventures of Jim Bowie.
No release timetable was given for the
Cagney & Lacey releases in HD VMD, nor for the other possible TV titles. But stay tuned and we'll keep you updated with any further info we find out about these!
