In mid-December we
let you know that Visual Entertainment Inc. (VEI) of Toronto was working on a DVD release of the classic cop show
Cagney & Lacey, picking up the long-stalled-on-home-video program after MGM put out their 2007 set titled "
Cagney & Lacey - The True Beginning: The Complete 1st Season Starring Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly" (actually the second season of the program). Today we spoke to VEI directly, and got some GREAT updated word about their plans for this show!
Their licensing deal for the series has now been fully signed, we're informed, and they are in talks with show creator Barney Rosenzweig to participate in the DVD set. Rosenzweig's wife, show star Sharon Gless (from the second season on), is also a natch to participate as long as they can work around her schedule for shooting episodes of
Burn Notice. Likewise, they hope Tyne Daly can work around her current work schedule (right now she's performing on the stage in plays at London's West End, we believe). We're hoping that these great people can work things out and make it happen!
Fans are surely wondering whether the original pilot telefilm with Loretta Swit and the actual first season co-starring Meg Foster will be part of VEI's plans? The answer is an unreserved YES! The license includes both of these, and VEI is looking into the possibility of releasing all of that, all at once, in a huge
Cagney & Lacey - The Complete Series collection with all 7 seasons, plus the pilot. Now, they're not sure whether it's possible to include the 4 post-series telefilms in such a box set, considering that S'More Entertainment has the rights to them separately and have already put them out as "
Cagney & Lacey - The Menopause Years." Maybe they can put a deal together for a special Limited Edition set, but that's just me thinking out loud. No guarantees, of course.
Since the deal was just truly signed, then that means the DVDs are still a long way off from hitting stores. It will be a long while before we have any sort of update for you about this. Still, VEI is hoping they can put this in your hands in time for Christmas gift-giving at the end of this year, so maybe we can bring you some happy holiday news long before then! Stay tuned. of course, and we'll fill you in as further developments occur.
