Four years ago, before TVShowsOnDVD had been purchased by TVGuide.com, we passed on a report
from TV Guide
magazine and the CSIFiles.com fan website. The 2005 write-up at the fan site said that "(the February 27 edition of) TV Guide...reported Paramount is currently planning to release a new version of the first-season DVD box set that will come with all-new bonus features not included on the original release.
" At the time, I editorialized about what a boon that would be for fans, who not only would be interested in the new bonus material, but also would love to get a home video release in the widescreen aspect ratio, as it was first aired. The original 2003 DVD release of C.S.I. - The Complete 1st Season
brought the episodes home in a full screen ratio, which didn't preserve the original broadcast picture format.
Alas, that release never happened on DVD back in 2005. It was around this time that plans for high-definition home video formats were beginning to ramp up, and the rumors were that the studio had decided to save the re-release back for an eventual release on one of those formats. For a year now, Blu-ray Disc has been the reigning hi-def home video format, and this morning CBS DVD and Paramount Home Entertainment made it official at long last: C.S.I. - The 1st Season
is coming home on Blu-ray Disc this May 12th
Video for the Las Vegas-based team's first season will be in widescreen (as originally broadcast), with high defintion 1080p video resolution for each episode. Audio is in English 7.1 "HD Audio" surround format. There's also a Spanish Stereo audio option, and subtitles in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Bonus material will be included, but it hasn't been detailed yet (hence we don't know for sure if the specific deleted scenes mentioned in our 2005 report will be included or not...but we figure that they are likely to be there). Package art isn't available yet, either, but we'll keep you informed of new developments as they occur. Stay tuned!
