A month ago we
reported that animation historian and expert Jerry Beck had been interviewed on Shokus Internet Radio, and while there had given fans a preview about what to expect on this year's
Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 6 DVD release. He told us to look for more cartoons (he said 76 instead of the usual 60) on 4 discs, including lots of wartime cartoons, all expected to show up in early November. This morning Warner Home Video has officially announced the title, and in the process they've set us straight on some of these details. First up, the release date is actually a tad earlier than he said, on
October 21st. Cost, as with the previous five
Golden Collection releases, is $64.92 SRP for a 4-DVD set. Next, and rather importantly, here is the studio description:
We’ve saved the best for last... more of your favorite Looney Tunes...your wish is our command. The concluding release from the Golden Collection Series is a 4-disc set with 60 more of the most looneytic Looney Tunes ever unleashed. Plus, 15 bonus shorts to make this the biggest collection of Looney Tunes ever! Indeed, some have never before been on home video!
"Saved the best for last." "The concluding release." Those two phrases in Warner's official description say it all: THIS IS THE END.
Volume 6 is the final
Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVD set planned. Wow. I'm upset about that. How about you?
[
UPDATE: Don't be upset, after all. We've learned that Warner is planning to continue Looney Toons releases on home video, but is not ready to share their plans at this time. You'll still see Bugs and his pals on DVD in 2009, just not under the "Golden Collection" labels. So, no worries!]
[
FURTHER UPDATE: We've also received word from a reliable industry source, that there are no current plans for the "post-Golden" releases to duplicate content from the six Golden Collection volumes. Expect Warner to continue to remaster and release Looney Tunes shorts which have never been seen on home video before.]
We also see that there will be a total of 75 shorts on board (one shy of the number Beck provided), with 60 of them named this morning as being among the "regular" featured shorts, and the other 15 not being named yet because they are "bonus" items, and the extras have not yet been revealed. We have a disc-by-disc listing of the "60 main shorts" for you, and every cartoon title mentioned in our previous report of Beck's interview comments will be found on this list:
