Back in 1972, CBS aired a half-hour sitcom called
Bridget Loves Bernie. It probably raised some eyebrows at the time, simply because back then there hadn't been a lot of TV shows whose premise was an interfaith marriage: that a Jewish cabbie who's working to become a writer (David Birney's "Bernie") would marry an Irish Catholic school teacher from a well-to-do family (Meredith Baxter's "Bridget"). The show
Bridget Loves Bernie only lasted a single season of 24 half-hour episodes, but was probably best known for bringing Baxter and Birney together in a real-life romance: they were married in 1974 (prompting her to go by the name Meredith Baxter-Birney until their divorce in 1989).
Starting this past Friday, Amazon.com began setting up a
a pre-release listing for
Bridget Loves Bernie - The Complete Series, as a
September 5th release on DVD. That information was confirmed over the weekend by
SitcomsOnline.com. While we're still waiting on an official announcement from Sony, there is information online this morning from the
Home Media Retailing trade magazine that says this is a 3-DVD set that will go for $29.95 SRP.
Stay tuned, and we'll be back with more details, plus cover art, when we get the official info from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
