Back in 1972, CBS aired a half-hour sitcom called Bridget Loves Bernie
. It probably raised some eyebrows at the time, simply because back then there hadn't been a lot of TV shows whose premise was an interfaith marriage: that a Jewish cabbie who's working to become a writer (David Birney's "Bernie") would marry an Irish Catholic school teacher from a well-to-do family (Meredith Baxter's "Bridget"). The show Bridget Loves Bernie
only lasted a single season of 24 half-hour episodes, but was probably best known for bringing Baxter and Birney together in a real-life romance: they were married in 1974 (prompting her to go by the name Meredith Baxter-Birney until their divorce in 1989).
Starting this past Friday, Amazon.com began setting up a a pre-release listing
for Bridget Loves Bernie - The Complete Series
, as a September 5th
release on DVD. That information was confirmed over the weekend by SitcomsOnline.com
. While we're still waiting on an official announcement from Sony, there is information online this morning from the Home Media Retailing
trade magazine that says this is a 3-DVD set that will go for $29.95 SRP.
Stay tuned, and we'll be back with more details, plus cover art, when we get the official info from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
