As the writers get back to work scripting your favorite shows, we're finding out that some of these programs are getting adjustments to their TV-DVD plans, due to the production shutdowns. First we heard that the strike-delayed second half of Battlestar Galactica's fourth season will cause the home video release of these final 20 episodes to be split into separate "Season 4.0" and "Season 4.5" DVD packages. Now we're finding out that the TBS sitcom My Boys is also affected: it will suffer a rather drastic schedule change for its first season DVD set.

Since the TV-on-DVD home video category hit it big, studios and networks have coordinated on currently-airing programs, almost always timing the DVD release of a show's most recently-finished season to hit stores just prior to the premiere of the next season's first episode. This helps to maximize the sales of these DVDs, and it boasts ratings on the new broadcasts at the same time. It's a great way to tie in both of these occasions with each other, and create a bigger event.

But what happens when that new season's start is delayed for a few months...say, due to a writers strike? When Sony Pictures Home Entertainment first planned on a March 11th release of My Boys - The Complete 1st Season, it was with enough lead time in front of them, that they couldn't yet plan on a WGA strike holding up the second season's start. And, once the strike was underway, there was no telling just how long it was going to last. With that in mind, Sony moved forward with their DVD announcement late last year, followed by a formal press release and then the finalized box art.

These past few days, retailers have been handed a revised schedule for Sony's DVD releases in March. You guessed it: My Boys is no longer on the list! Officially a new release date hasn't been established, but one huge online retailer, Amazon, has gone so far as to update their pre-order listing to show a new street date of September 2nd...an almost six-month delay.

We checked in with Sony, of course, and they confirm that the release date of the 1st Season set is indeed moving farther away: they want the DVD launch to more closely coincide with the strike-delayed start of the second season of My Boys. However, TBS hasn't finalized a precise date for that broadcast restart yet, so Sony tells us not to count on the Sept. 2nd date shown at Amazon as final just yet. If the second season begins airing sooner, the DVD will come sooner. So that 9/2 schedule is just a placeholder of sorts for now, and Sony will let us know what the actual date is just as soon as they decide on it. And we'll pass it on to all of you, of course, so stay tuned.

In the meantime, we have no doubts that this is just the tip of the iceberg. Michael Ausiello's show status chart tells us that many established hit shows (Grey's Anatomy, 30 Rock, CSI, Smallville, etc.) will get new episodes airing around April/May to "finish up this season". Around the time these eps are broadcast, the home video studios will be firming up their plans for the next DVD releases of each program. We're certain that many will turn out to be affected by the strike in some fashion. It only remains to be seen how.
