The Book of Daniel - Aidan Quinn's Short-Lived Program Comes To DVD

Posted by David Lambert
In The Book of Daniel, Rev. Daniel Webster (Aidan Quinn, "An Early Frost," "Legends of the Fall") is challenged on many levels as he struggles to be a good husband, father and minister, while navigating an often rocky relationship with the church hierarchy, led by Bishop Beatrice Congreve (Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn, "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," "Requiem of a Dream") and Roger Paxton, a senior warden of the parish and stalwart churchgoer (Dylan Baker, "Kinsey," "Happiness").

Webster also has loving, but challenging relationships with his three children: Peter (Christian Campbell, "Trick"), his 23-year-old gay son, struggling with the loss of his twin brother; his 16-year-old daughter Grace (Alison Pill, "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen"), a talented Manga artist dealing with typical teenage angst; and Adam (Ivan Shaw, "All My Children"), his 16-year-old adopted Chinese son, a handsome and cocky high school jock with a wicked sense of humor.

Keeping Webster grounded is his strong, loving wife Judith (Susanna Thompson, "Once and Again") - who is also coming to terms with the loss of her son and her own future and ambitions now that her children are nearly grown - and Jesus (Garret Dillahunt, "Deadwood"), his best friend and confidante who serves as a sounding board and encourages Webster to find the answers to his questions within himself.

NBC's controversial series The Book Of Daniel was broadcast early in 2006, but before the first episode hit the air it was already "canceled" in 8 markets: affiliates in Nashville, Little Rock, Terre Haute, Amarillo and four other markets decided not to air the show about the Episcopalian priest who talks to Jesus (in person). While a different Little Rock station decided to pick it up, by the second episode other stations were pulling out, and soon advertisers were as well. By the 4th episode's airing, NBC had decided to make it the last one and cancel the series.

Too bad; it wasn't that bad at all, and it was completely tongue-in-cheek and never took itself seriously from my own point of view. On the other hand, it's understandable how some may be offended by the material. Are you a fan of the show and want to get it? Are you someone who didn't get to see it, are curious and want to judge it for yourself? It was made available for a while via streaming video at, but now you'll be able to get all 8 produced episodes on DVD. Universal is releasing this as a 2-DVD set on September 26th, for $29.98 SRP. There's no other info available just yet, but the studio may provide more as soon as later today. We'll get back to you when we know more; stay tuned!
