Los Angeles, CA; March 4, 2014 - Dr. Hartley will see you now... Shout! Factory has announced the May 27 release of The Bob Newhart Show: The Complete Series
, a 19-DVD box set of the iconic TV show. The box set includes new interviews with Bob Newhart, Jack Riley, Bill Daily, Peter Bonerz, and Michael Zinberg, The Bob Newhart Show
19th Anniversary from 1991, the original unaired pilot, audio commentaries, a gag reel, and a 40-page book including an essay by the Emmy-winning writer Vince Waldron.
This sitcom classic stars the incomparable Bob Newhart as Dr. Robert Hartley, a Chicago psychologist who finds himself surrounded by some unusual and neurotic characters on the job, as well as at home. Hartley faces an uphill battle to not lose patience with his patients. But with the support of his quick-witted wife Emily (Suzanne Pleshette), you can count on him to conduct a healthy session of laugh therapy in all 142 episodes of The Bob Newhart Show
. An outstanding supporting cast is on call to back up Newhart and Pleshette, including Bill Daily (I Dream of Jeannie
), Peter Bonerz (Murphy Brown
), Jack Riley (Rugrats, Spaceballs
), and Marcia Wallace (The Simpsons
David Davis and Lorenzo Music, the writers and producers behind The Mary Tyler Moore Show
, created the series specifically with Bob Newhart in mind. As Waldron writes in his essay, like The Mary Tyler Moore Show
, the series was populated by witty, sincere people who daily faced the irrational realities of ordinary life. The show's undercurrent of preposterous logic was actually an outgrowth of Newhart's own clearly defined comic persona. The performer, whose nightclub act routinely featured one-sided conversations with Abraham Lincoln, Sir Walter Raleigh, and King Kong, was certainly no stranger to surrealism. "Comedy," Newhart once observed, "is my way of bringing logic to an illogical situation." There's also little doubt that Pleshette's unapologetic sensuality gave the show a distinctive, sophisticated edge. "We were selling class and charm and wit," David Davis told TV Guide
's Dwight Whitney.
Originally airing on CBS from 1972 to 1978, The Bob Newhart Show
is often cited among the best-loved situation comedies in history, with TV Guide
naming it one of the greatest television shows of all time. Get ready to lie back on the couch and laugh with Bob - you'd be crazy not to.
