Despite officially denying it
when we asked a couple of weeks ago, after Amazon jumped the gun and posted a listing
for it too early, Universal has just announced the March 18th
release of Bionic Woman - Volume 1
starring Michelle Ryan. Note that this *IS* the recent 2007 series, while the temporarily deactivated Amazon listing wrongly indicates otherwise by showing Lindsay Wagner as the star. No, that would be for the 1976 version, which is not what this DVD covers.
When we asked about the Amazon listing when it first appeared two weeks ago, and whether it was for the 2007 version, we were told by Universal that they had "not officially determined and/or announced a street date for the new Bionic Woman as of yet
." In our story, we agreed with that thinking on the basis of the March date, when the studio was already busy announcing their April schedule. Universal's announcement this morning of a March 18th release for this product certain puts egg on our faces for passing along their "CYA" story, and for the rare short lead time to get this product into stores.
Bionic Woman - Volume 1
will be a 2-DVD set costing $29.98 SRP. Video is Animorphic Widescreen (1.78:1), audio is English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, subtitles are English and Spanish. The running time is 5 hours 38 minutes (which doesn't sound like enough for all 8 episodes which have already aired, but as reader Joseph Molnar points out that it works out to a bit over 42 minutes an episode, which could be right). Extras (which are all on Disc 2 except for the commentary) included on this release are:
- Pilot Commentary with Executive Producer David Eick
- The Making of the Car Crash
- The Stunts
- Real Life Bionics
Besides Michelle Ryan in the title role, the series also stars Miguel Ferrer, Lucy Hale, Mark Sheppard, Molly Price, Kevin Rankin and Will Yun Lee, with recurring appearances by Katee Sackhoff and Isaiah Washington. We presume the "Volume 1" label is due to the way the season was interupted by the writers' strike, and to possibly gain new support for the show before the strike ends and the show goes back on the air at NBC. We'll see. Cover art isn't available yet, but stay tuned!
