This morning we
broke the news that Universal Studios Home Entertainment had announced an
October 19th 4-DVD release of
The Bionic Woman - Season 1. Now we have some additional updates for you!
First, the aspect ratio: in our report this morning we told you that Universal's information mentioned that the video for this title would be formatted as "Anamorphic Widescreen (1.78:1)." This would not be the original broadcast picture format, so we expressed concern about that in our story, and got in touch with the studio just as soon as we could. This afternoon we received a response from one of Universal's executives, who researched it and informed us that the DVD release of
The Bionic Woman - Season 1 will indeed be in the original aspect ratio of the network broadcasts: 1.33:1 "full screen." We also have it on excellent authority that the soon-to-be announced
Six Million Dollar Man DVD releases will also be in the original full frame video format. GREAT to hear!
The original announcement's info about "English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround" audio was a bit fishy-sounding as well, so we doubled-checked that with Universal, too. They told us that the correct audio info is Dolby Digital 2.0, so please note that as well.
While we waited for that info, Universal also updated retailers with information about the contents. Fans will be VERY pleased to hear this tidbit, an exact quote from the studio's material: "
Includes 3 episodes of The Six Million Dollar Man, featuring the origins of the Bionic Woman, and a never-before-seen Bionic Beginnings Featurette.." Yes, this means that Universal's
Bionic Woman set will include the
Six Million Dollar Man crossover episodes "The Bionic Woman, Parts 1 and 2," "The Return of the Bionic Woman, Parts 1 and 2," and "Welcome Home, Jaime, Part 1" (almost always syndicated as a
BW episode, but originally aired as a
SMDM episode with "Part 2" originally airing as a
BW episode).
So extras on
The Bionic Woman - Season 1 will include those
SMDM crossover episodes, plus the brand new "Bionic Beginnings" Featurette. Anything else? Even though Universal's material doesn't presently mention it, show creator Kenneth Johnson has
reported at his personal website that he's already recorded a commentary track for the first season finale episode, "The Ghosthunter" (which guest stars Kristy McNichol of TV's
Family). Kenny's site has posted a picture of him in the commentary recording session for that episode, and we've got a smaller look at it for you below (note that he brought along his
Bionic Woman crew jacket for the session!).
It's also mentioned at the same page on Kenny's site that he's continuing to record commentaries and other extras for both this release, and for Time-Life's
Six Million Dollar Man DVD release. Kenny will record commentary tracks for the
Bionic Woman - Season 2 episode "Doomsday is Tomorrow" (a two-part story). Kenny's site also says, "
He will also record a commentary on his original Bionic Woman two-parter for the SMDM set." Great to hear! But wait, those are part of the bonus crossover episodes that will appear on Universal's
Season 1 set. Will Kenny's commentaries appear on those episodes for BOTH releases? We frankly don't know for certain, but if we were to guess then we would expect Kenny's commentaries for the
SMDM episodes "The Bionic Woman, Parts 1 and 2" to only appear on the
SMDM set, and not also be found on the
BW set. That would probably be overkill, right?
More information as it arrives, of course. Stay tuned for updates and package art, and (hopefully very soon now!)
Six Million Dollar Man DVD info as well. In the meantime, here's that great picture of Kenny Johnson recording a
Bionic Woman commentary track; be sure to visit his site at the link above to find this picture in its original full size!
