The Bionic Woman - Universal Studios Announces Season 1 DVDs: Date, Cost and More!

Look for the legendary Lindsay Wagner series to leap home in mid-October

Posted by David Lambert
GOOD MORNING! We're pleased to bring you the news that Universal Studios Home Entertainment has just announced that The Bionic Woman - Season 1, starring Lindsay Wagner and Richard Anderson, will be available to own on October 19th. It's priced at $39.98 SRP. Package art isn't ready yet, nor have a list of extras been included with this morning's announcement. However, we know bonus material HAS been recorded: as we reported back in April, show creator/producer/writer Kenneth Johnson has recorded a commentary track for the first season's final episode "The Ghosthunter" (as well as recording a commentary for a second season two-part episode, but a release date for that set hasn't been announced yet).

Again, the info is early, and we're going to try to find out more about this for you. But of immediate concern to use is the specs! The show was originally broadcast in 1.33 "full screen" video format, but Universal's announcement this morning describes a DVD release with a video aspect ratio of "Anamorphic Widescreen (1.78:1)." If this is true, then it could mean that the original image was cropped, top and bottom, in order to better fit modern television screens. We SINCERELY hope that Universal didn't make the mistake of cutting away portions of the image for any reason! This studio releases classic television all the time in the original broadcast aspect ratio of the program, so we hope that this is more likely to a typo than anything else. We promise, we'll look into it as soon as possible!

Other specs currently seen in the announcement info show an audio track of English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, and subtitles in English SDH. This comes on 4 single-sides DVDs, and while we have no picture of the packaging yet, we do have the description of it as "Slim Snap Cases with (an) Outer Box." That's all we have for you at the moment, but stay tuned for updates. And stay tuned for Six Million Dollar Man DVD info from Time-Life; we're been given hints to expect that announcement VERY soon.

UPDATE: We followed up the above story, posted early in the morning, with a late afternoon news story that clears up the aspect ratio issue, and also talks about more bonus material for Universal's DVD release of The Bionic Woman - Season 1 (including crossover episodes of The Six Million Dollar Man!). Be sure to click that link and read the update info.
