Some news is simply TOO big to post on April 1st. No matter much you claim otherwise, people will think it's a gag. And when there's word about the long-awaited DVD collections of the 4th- and 6th-most requested unreleased shows, it certainly falls under that category. So you wait a bit, and pass the word along a day later, when all that April fool-ishness is over. Now, today is that day! This is NOT a joke. This is IT. The word we've been given is that the rights issues related to the novel Cyborg
- issues which I detailed
in a write-up for TVGuide.com several years ago - have all been worked out. Reliable industry sources, who are certainly in a position to know, have told us that both The Six Million Dollar Man
and the spin-off series The Bionic Woman
are in the works for DVD release in the USA. At last!
We're told that Universal Studios Home Entertainment is working on bringing both shows to market, possibly in partnership (on at least one of these) with Time-Life. When? No sooner than the Fall 2010 time period (which makes the timing right for the gift-giving season), and it might even be next year before these see the light of day. But they ARE coming! Will these be season sets or complete series, or something else? "To Be Decided," we hear, but regardless of that, we're told that you can expect EVERY episode of both shows to be released before all is said and done...including the post-series telefilms! Crossover episodes to be handled "properly"? Yes, that's the idea! Remastering of the source material? Of course!
What about extras? The answer is most certainly "yes." In fact, Kenneth Johnson (producer/writer on Six Million Dollar Man
, and creator/producer/writer on Bionic Woman
) has revealed at his website
yesterday that he will shortly be recording on-camera interviews for The Bionic Woman
, as well as commentary tracks for BW
episodes "The Ghosthunter" (the season one finale with guest star Kristy McNichol) and "Doomsday is Tomorrow" (a two-part story that aired midway through the show's second season). Will Kenny be alone in recording extras? Nope, we hear that he'll have company, including cast members as well as other behind-the-scenes crew. We don't have specific names for you yet, because nothing's locked in or recorded just yet.
Remember, nothing is officially announced so far, and everything is subject to change. This is an early "heads-up" for you, to start saving your pennies, and get yourself ready to go Bionic on DVD at long last. Our thanks to various readers who wrote in to make sure we had seen Kenny Johnson's website, as well as to each of our industry contacts who took time to help us get this story straight. Stay tuned for more, as further developments occur!
