A week ago TVShowsOnDVD brought you
a story filling you in on rumors for
Bewitched plans on DVD. In a nutshell, the plans were said to be for separate releases of both Season 1 and Season 2 (both in the original black-and-white), in April, at an SRP of $39.95 for just the episodes (no extras).
Now we have new information from an informant familiar with Sony's plans for this project, who tells us that this is mostly correct, but that there are key differences between it and what Sony's currently moving forward with. In the story last week, TVShowsOnDVD expressed surprise that the DVD plans were three months in advance of the July premiere of the new
Bewitched film starring Nicole Kidman, Will Ferrell, Shirley MacLaine, and Michael Caine. Our new info tells us that the planned DVD street date is now in early June, which is much much closer to the debut of the film that's based on this series.
Also, our informant goes further and specifies that only the first season will be released on that date, a plan that is more in keeping with Sony's normal plans. There are exceptions, of course (
Seinfeld, notably), but the vast majority of the time Sony - like most studios - release only a single season of a given show on a given street date. And 36 first-season episodes of Samantha and Darrin are enough to get started with, isn't it? It makes sense to save the second season for later...perhaps as a tie-in to the new film's DVD release.
Bear in mind that this is ALL rumor mill stuff - the news last week as well as today's update. But stay tuned, and we'll fill you in once the studio themselves speaks to us about their plans directly. Don't touch that dial!
