Batman - Yes, an Adam West Batman Blu-ray Disc IS Coming, But...

...it's the '60s theatrical film, not episodes of the classic TV show

Way back in December 2005, we posted a story to report that the '60s Batman series starring Adam West and Burt Ward was still *not* coming to DVD. We hate to say it, but as of right now nothing seems to have changed, and it's still held up over rights issues.

However, back in that old story, we mentioned that "...(Adam) West...was quoted as saying that he would participate in DVD extras", and since then (around the Spring 2006 timeframe) we had gotten a few e-mails from readers telling us that West said at a convention that he *did* participate in extras for a new Batman release. We contacted Fox at the time to find out if the series had finally been cleared for home video release, and were told simply that nothing had been resolved. Recent inquiries asking the same, were met with the same answer.

Yesterday (3/21) our friend Bill Hunt at The Digital Bits posted a look at upcoming catalog title releases on Blu-ray Disc from Fox (and Fox-distributed MGM) for later in this year. One of the items he mentioned was "the classic Batman: The Movie". A number of readers sent us notes, checking in to make sure we had seen this; thank you for the e-mails. Yes, we can confirm that this is on-the-way. We don't usually report on theatrical films here at TVShowsOnDVD, but so many people are eager for news on the Adam West version of Batman, it's certainly understandable.

And yes, it seems from what we hear that this release IS the one that West and Ward participated in new extras for. The film, not episodes of the TV show (well, they COULD have recorded material to "bank" for an eventual clearance, but right now we only know about the film). When will it come out? We're not sure, because the studio hasn't officially announced it yet, nor have our retail contacts been given a specific date. However, it's a good guess we'll see this prior to the June 18th theatrical debut of The Dark Knight, the newest Batman film starring Christian Bale. Warner is releasing Batman Begins on Blu-ray on July 8th, so perhaps Fox will release Batman: The Movie at the same time.

How much will it cost? We're not sure of that either, but we note that most upcoming Fox and MGM Blu-ray Disc catalog releases hit the streets at about $39.98 SRP. Is this also coming out on DVD? Possibly, but we've heard no certain word of one. Fox released Batman: The Movie on DVD way in 2001, and it DID contain some nice extras (West & Ward commentary track, a featurette about Batman, a Batmobile featurette, trailers for the film, and a photo gallery). Those extras could possibly be included on the new Blu-ray Disc release, too. We'll have to wait and see.
