Unschooled homesteader Sayward Luckett couldn't read her name if you showed it to her, yet she fell in love with and married agnostic, book-learned frontier lawyer Portius Wheeler. Now it's time to make a life with him in wild, wooded 1790s Ohio Territory. There will be children, seven in all; joy and hardships aplenty; inconstancies of heart; and the enduring legacy of settling a new land.
Based on Conrad Richter's trilogy of novels (he received a Pulitzer Prize for the third), this miniseries - nominated for 6 Emmy Awards - celebrates the pioneering spirit as it chronicles Sayward's heroic, unadorned life. Elizabeth Montgomery and Hal Holbrook (earning two of those six Emmy nominations) lead a strong cast that includes Jane Seymour and W.H. Macy (his first screen credit).
The classic NBC-aired 1978 mini-series The Awakening Land
, starring Elizabeth Montgomery of Bewitched
, is now available to order
as of today (January 19th
) from the Warner Archive as an MOD (manufacture-on-demand) DVD. This comes on 3 discs, running approximately 333 minutes long. According to the top of the listing it is presented in widescreen, and further down it re-iterates "16x9 full frame" video (which is another way the Archive describes"widescreen"). We're uncertain if this aspect ratio is accurate, though, as a few other TV-DVD titles from the Archive - such as Planet Earth
, for example - are listed this way online...but the actual disc arrives in 4x3 full screen. However the picture turns out to be framed, the price is $24.95, and like all MOD titles is is only available to ship to addresses in the United States due to legal restrictions.
