In a future where science fiction is reality, Dr. Boynton creates a super-robot in his deceased son's image. Named Astro Boy, the robot can swim oceans, leap over mountains and even fly into space - but he can't replace the doctor's son. Abandoned and disowned, soon Astro Boy is befriended by Dr. Packadermus J. Elefun of the Institute of Science, and together, they embark upon an amazing adventure. With super strength, rocket-powered flight, a selfless heart and a kind demeanor, Astro Boy fights a never-ending crusade against the forces of evil!
Back in 2006, Right Stuf International released
Astroboy - Ultra Edition: Set 1 and
Astroboy - Ultra Edition: Set 2. Each of these are an 11-disc collection (22 DVDs in all) costing over a hundred dollars per collection, and they remain THE definitive way of owning the entire original 1963 series...which was Osamu Tezuka's introduction of anime to the world.
Now, to tie in with the new CGI theatrical film - coming out in October of this year (voice cast includes Kristen Bell, Nicolas Cage, Bill Nighy, Donald Sutherland, Eugene Levy, Nathan Lane, and Freddie Highmore) - Right Stuf International is going back and releasing two new "mini" DVD sets: smaller and more affordable "best-of" collections with 5 disc in each collection, with only episodes and no extras.
Astroboy - Set 1 (550 mins) and
Astroboy - Set 2 (594 mins), as they are simply titled, have a cost of $49.99 SRP per 5-disc set. Video is in the original black-and-white, and audio is in English. The release date is
September 29th. Front cover art is below (and yes, the
Set 1 key art is the same as the
Ultra Edition: Set 1 key art, with some minor differences that are mostly in the text).
