A couple of weeks ago we
passed along a report that
Archie Bunker's Place would possibly come to DVD in 2006. It's happening, all right, and a lot quicker than we would have expected!
Video Business magazine is reporting in their new print edition this week that
Archie Bunker's Place - The Complete 1st Season will arrive in stores on
January 31st:
The All In The Family spinoff debuts on DVD on Jan. 31. Sony's three-disc set ($29.95) offers all 24 episodes, including such guest stars as Sammy Davis Jr., Andy Garcia and Jerry Stiller.
Those weren't the only recognizable faces, either: Florence Halop (later of
Night Court showed up, as did Rob Reiner as Michael "Meathead" Stivic and Sally Struthers as his wife (and Archie & Edith's daughter, of course), Gloria. The Stivics are there for a special double-length "Thanksgiving Reunion" episode along with their son, Joey. The Sammy Davis Jr. appearance directly makes reference to Sammy's previous encounter with the character of Archie Bunker in
the 2nd Season of All In The Family.
All In The Family - Season 2 also contained the first appearance of Bea Arthur as Edith's cousin, Maude, and so we should not forget that
SitcomsOnline.com had reported that
Maude would see its own DVD debut on the same date as
Archie Bunker's Place. So, while
VB didn't mention it in their write-up, fans of
Maude should stay tuned for a potential announcement there within the next two weeks. We may also have more information about
Archie Bunker's Place - The Complete 1st Season at about the same time.
Finally, a correction: in our previous story regarding
Archie Bunker's Place, we stated that the show took place "after Jean Stapleton's 'Edith' left the show". We were mistaken; Stapleton was with
ABP in its first season. It was in the debut of the second season of the "new" show that Edith passed away, and Archie and 11-year-old Stephanie (Danielle Brisebois, who had been with the Bunkers for two years, since the debut of the final season of
AitF) were left to face her death. TVShowsOnDVD regrets the error.
