Last weekend we
reported that Time Life is prepping a
November 6th release of the 1-disc offering
The Andy Williams Show - The Best Of. In the studio material we passed along, courtesy of distributor WEA (Warner/Elektra/Atlantic Corporation, who - like Time Life - is not actually affiliated with Time Warner Inc. any longer), it was stated in a very explicate manner "
FIRST TIME ON DVD - The Andy Williams Show has never before been released to DVD market" (quoted directly from studio material).
One of our longtime and most helpful readers, Jim P., brought to our attention that this isn't an accurate statement. He was aware of a previous offering from Time Life that went by the same title on the front cover:
The Andy Williams Show - The Best Of; the obvious difference in the title being that it's remarked on the bottom that this is a "2-Disc Collector's Edition." The cover art is very similar, too, except that it is colored light blue instead of green (see below).
Despite the similarity in names, the content is also quite different as well! There is no mention of Ray Charles, "Mama" Cass Elliot or Ella Fitzgerald in the description of the 2-Disc
Best Of set. We tried to find listings for this other release at our affiliate online retail partners, Amazon.com and DVDEmpire.com, and also at Time Life's online store. We had no luck finding this at those sites, but our helpful reader, Jim P., sent us a link to find
a listing at CCMusic.com. Here are the details for the show for this item,
The Andy Williams Show - The Best Of: 2-Disc Collector's Edition, which they sell for $26.95 after discount:
Four classic, complete shows from one of TV’s great variety shows! From 1962 to 1971, Andy Williams hosted an hour-long program on NBC and won three Emmys in the process, and this special, not-sold-in-stores set captures some of his most essential airings. From March 1, 1965 come 'Dang Me' Roger Miller; 'This Could Be the Start of Something Big' Andy with Count Basie & His Orchestra and Tony Bennett, and Andy’s own 'Moon River'; the October 11, 1965 show featured Mary Tyler Moore (!) singing 'Hey, Babe, Hey' as well as duets with Bob Hope. January 11, 1965 had two hit-packed medleys, one with Andy, Vic Damone and Bobby Darin, the other with Henry Mancini, and October 2, 1966 spotlighted 'Put the Blame on Mame' Peggy Lee; 'The Impossible Dream' Jack Jones; 'I Can’t Get Started' Andy with Al Hirt, and comedy with Bob Newhart! Features a bonus 2007 interview with Andy Williams himself! 140 minutes, color.
