Ally McBeal - Scoop on The Complete Series AND Season 1: Finalized Date, Package, Extras

Previously reported October date and pricing confirmed with official studio announcement

Back in mid-June we reported that long-awaited DVD releases of Ally McBeal were coming to the USA at last. Our information came from a pair of Amazon pre-order listings, which were in advance of the Fox Home Entertainment's official announcement of the titles, so no actual release dates were given. The listings are for Ally McBeal - The Complete Series (and showed some possible package art at the time, which we warned could be subject to change) as well as a smaller Ally McBeal - The Complete 1st Season set.

Pricing on The Complete Series was shown by Amazon to be $199.98 SRP, and the list cost of The Complete 1st Season has been displayed as $39.98 SRP. Both can be pre-ordered at a discount. On the evening before the 4th of July, we let you know that Amazon was showing a release date of October 6th for both titles, but the e-tailer removed that date from both listings shortly into the post-holiday week.

Today, however, we're pleased to pass along word that the studio has officially informed all retailers of both releases. The date and costs have been confirmed, exactly as previously reported. No information is available yet about whether any musical compromises have had to be made in order to get these on the market, but we're trying to find out! We will let you know as soon as we do.

In the meantime, we can pass along several details about each one. The Ally McBeal - The Complete 1st Season set consists of 6 discs running 1035 minutes. No bonus material is mentioned in the studio information. Video is full frame, audio is English and French in "Dolby Surround" and Spanish Stereo. Subtitles are present in English, French and Spanish. Package art can be found at the very bottom of this report.

Ally McBeal - The Complete Series ships on 32 discs running 5175 minutes. Audio specs and subtitles appear to be the same as listed above for The Complete 1st Season. Video is full frame for the first six discs (the first season), then moves to widescreen for the remainder of the episodes. The five seasons on the first 30 discs are presented with only the episodes; no bonus material is mentioned. The extras appear to be saved up for Disc #31, which has the following supplements:
  • Special Features:
    • New! Retrospective
  • Vintage Featurettes:
    • Season 2: Fox Behind the Scenes
    • Season 2 TV Special: Life and Trials of Ally McBeal
    • Season 3 Featurette
    • Behind the Scenes of Season 5
    • Season 5: Goodbye, Ally
  • The Practice Season 2 - Axe Murderer - This cross-over episode originally aired immediately after The Inmates from Ally McBeal, Season 1.
  • Vonda Shepard Music Video
And what about Disc 32? Fox's information lists it as a "The Best of Ally McBeal Soundtrack"! Sweet. Finalized package art for Ally McBeal - The Complete Series is immediately below, followed by the box cover for The Complete 1st Season set.
