Much has been made of the comparison in styles and target audiences for Warner's two rather different
Popeye DVD releases coming out on
June 17th, but one look at the marketing probably sums it up nicely.
We had already provided a link one previous news story to the
trailer for the 2-disc "collectible" release of
Popeye the Sailor - Volume 2: 1938-1940 ($34.98 SRP). That trailer, in black-and-white (like the episodes on this release) emphasizes phrases like "a legend returns," "the franchise," "an unstoppable icon," "unforgettable," "original theatrical masters," "historic past," "remastered and unedited" and "rare never-before-seen special features." Wording that is obviously meant to appeal to collectors!
Now Warner has
a new trailer for the 1-disc "family-friendly" release of
Popeye & Friends - Volume 1, coming out the same day for $14.97 SRP. The brightly-colored trailer starts off with a look at Popeye's nephews and sports words like "fun" (repeated several times), "swing into action," "full-color," "unforgettable adventures" and - notably - "perfect for your entire crew." There are also scenes shown that represent a more contemporary approach to stories with speedboats, modern plumbing problems, and even a tiny alien in a ship that looks quite like something George Jetson would fly. Also quite telling is the one-sheet flyer mailed to retailers about this release, with the headline "Introducing Popeye For Kids." So, if you're looking for a more "general audiences" release coming from an official studio source, this is the one you've been waiting for.
