As the USA begun its bicentennial celebration in 1976, PBS ran a 13-part miniseries The Adams Chronicles, telling the story of the original father-and-son US Presidents, John Adams and John Quincy Adams, and their family, which is descended from Pilgrim John Alden (a signer of the Mayflower Compact). John Adams was a co-sponsor and signer of the Declaration of Independence, served as the first constitutional Vice President and the second President (the first to reside in the White House). His son, John Quincy Adams, was the nation's sixth President under the US Constitution. The Adams Chronicles tells the fascinating story of 5 generations of their family, covering 150 years! The production won 4 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series.
Turner Classic Movies is reporting that all 13 episodes will be available on a 4-DVD set beginning on May 13th. Cost is shown to be $59.99, but we're not sure if that is supposed to represent a list price or a discounted "street price". The enormous cast includes George Grizzard (Emmy-nominated for his role here as "John Adams"), Kathryn Walker (who won the Outstanding Lead Actress Emmy for her role as "Abigail Smith Adams"), David Birney (TV's Serpico) as "John Quincy Adams", William Daniels (Boy Meets World) as an older "John Quincy Adams", Nancy Barrett (Dark Shadows), John Houseman (The Paper Chase), Nancy Marchand (The Sopranos), and James Noble (Benson). No further details about this release are available yet, but stay tuned and we'll update you if we hear anything further. Our thanks to a reader who only signed their name as "WMA" for tipping us off to this great news!
CLARIFICATION (12/19): Turner Classic Movies is the source of our info that this release is coming. The studio releasing the package will be Acorn Media. We requested further info and/or cover art, but we were told that this is not available just yet.
