As time has gone by, various studios have decided to repackage some of their season set releases of popular shows into more compact box designs. We've seen Fox lead the way on this with programs such as
The X-Files,
Buffy,
M*A*S*H, but other studios have also done it, such as Sony with
The Shield.
This morning Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will be re-releasing
The A-Team - Season 1 on DVD in new packaging. The
original set, which came out in June 2004, arrived in what the studio describes as a "Digipak with Slip Sleeve". Universal's new release, scheduled to be available on
December 16, 2008, will come in "Slim Snap Cases with (an) Outer Box". This is what's commonly referred to as "thinpaks", and it's the kind of packaging that the 2nd through 5th seasons were originally shipped in. So here the studio is just shifting to make things more consistent.
A picture of the new packaging wasn't provided by the studio yet, but indications are that it will use the same key art as the previous version. Comparing all information between the old and new releases, all content and specs are the same, as is the pricing ($49.98 SRP). For those of you who already have the first season, there's no compelling reason to upgrade (unless you just really need to have every set match perfectly!). But we wanted to let you know about it, so there's no confusion about what the new release is for.
