ABC Stage 67 - The Sondheim-Scored 'Evening Primrose' Episode, Starring Anthony Perkins, on DVD Tomorrow!

This long-lost treasure comes home at last from eOne Entertainment

The people are gone. The doors are locked. Darkness descends inside a department store. Fleeing the pressures of the outside world, an unhappy poet is at last alone. But not quite. In his new-found sanctuary, he comes across a group of hermits who have been hiding there for years. Among them is a young girl, with whom he falls in love.

Created especially for television, Evening Primrose aired only once on ABC Stage 67. Starring Anthony Perkins and Charmian Carr, the production featured a teleplay adapted by James Goldman (from a short story by John Collier) and a score that included some of Stephen Sondheim's most hauntingly beautiful songs - among them "If You Find Me, I'm Here" and "Take Me to the World."

This long-lost treasure is now available for the first time ever - impeccably restored and re-mastered from a pristine kinescope print.
Here's a DVD release we overlooked! But, thanks to the New York Time article dated yesterday, we've got the word that tomorrow - October 26th - will mark the release from eOne Entertainment of the ABC Stage 67 anthology series' 1966 episode "Evening Primrose," starring Anthony Perkins (Psycho, The Black Hole, Crimes of Passion) and scored by none other than Stephen Sondheim (West Side Story, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street)!

eOne's DVD release of "ABC Stage 67 - Evening Primrose" includes the restored/remastered 50-minute episode, which co-stars Charmian Carr ("Liesl" in the classic Sound of Music film), Larry Gates (a 1985 Supporting Actor Daytime Emmy winner in Guiding Light), and Dorothy Stickney (The Waltons - The Homecoming: A Christmas Story). In addition, the following bonus material is included:
  • Newly recorded video interview with director Paul Bogart
  • Newly recorded audio interview with Chamian Carr
  • Full color test footage with Anthony Perkins
  • Booklet with written contributions by Stephen Sondheim and Jane Klain of the Paley Center for Media
The last one on the list mentions Jane Klain of the Paley Center for Media. The Times article points out that it was Klain who made this release happen using a "newly discovered black-and-white 16-millimeter copy" which became the source material for the DVD, as the original color master tape has been lost. This single-disc release will cost $29.98 SRP, but can be ordered from Amazon at a discount using the button link below. Under that is the front cover of the package. Don't miss this special slice of TV history!
