ABC Afterschool Specials - Wow! 'Trapper-Keeper' packaging for V1 & V2, plus 4 more Vol's in-the-works!

During this past weekend we posted stunning news that two different releases of the Afterschool Specials were coming to DVD next month (Oct. 12, to be exact). In response to this, the folks at BCI Eclipse sent over lots more info about their plans for this fantastic and memorable series.

For starters, here is the artwork they sent us for the packaging they will use on the first two volumes. Each is a 2-DVD release (with two installments on each disc) in a single-wide "slimcase." That DVD case slides into an outer package that is designed to look like the "Trapper Keeper"-style of notebooks that became popular during the '70s, and which are still around (in more modern forms) to this day. I wish we had room to show you all of the artwork that BCI was kind enough to send over, but here's enough to get the idea:

Neat, eh? And if that wasn't cool enough, then get ready for more award-winning classic TV. BCI Eclipse has informed us that there are already plans for 4 more volumes in this seres. Each of them will continue to be 2-DVD sets with 4 episodes in each release, for a total of 16 more installments of the Afterschool Specials. Here's what you can expect.
  • Volume #3: 1978 - '79
    • It's a Mile From Here to Glory
    • Thank You, Jackie Robinson (a.k.a. "A Home Run For Love")
    • Gaucho
    • My Other Mother (a.k.a. "Which Mother Is Mine?," starring Little House's Melissa Sue Anderson)

  • Volume #4: 1979 - '80
    • A Special Gift (Peabody Award)
    • The Gold Test (a.k.a. "The Heartbreak Winner")
    • What Are Friends For?
    • Schoolboy Father (starring West Wing's Rob Lowe, Diff'rent Strokes' Dana Plato, Facts of Life's Nancy McKeon)

  • Volume #5: 1981 - '82
    • A Matter of Time (Emmy Award, starring Rob Lowe)
    • First Step (a.k.a. "She Drinks a Little," winner of 2 Emmy Awards, starring St. Elsewhere's Bonnie Bartlett)
    • Tough Girl
    • The Night Swimmers (a.k.a. "Daddy, I'm Their Momma Now," starring The Wonder Years' Jason Hervey)

  • Volume #6: 1982 - '86
    • Two Loves For Jenny (a.k.a. "Between Two Loves")
    • Did You Hear What Happened to Andrea? (a.k.a. "Andrea's Story: A Hitchhiking Tragedy," winner of 5 Emmy Awards, starring L.A. Law's Michelle Greene)
    • Ace Hits the Big Time (starring Ally McBeal's James LeGros)
    • Face at the Edge of the World (a.k.a. "A Desperate Exit," starring The Cosby Show's Malcolm-Jamal Warner)

Wow, lots of great stuff there! And you can be assured that there is high quality all throughout: Martin Tahse Productions has won 18 Emmy Awards and additionally won close to twenty other major awards for excellence in film and television production. To quote the marketing matreial, these Afterschool Specials truly pay a tribute to a by-gone era of youth television at its finest. These DVDs look like they are being put together quite well, and we can't wait to get our hands on them.

Once more, the street date on the first two volumes is October 12th, just a few weeks away. The street date for the next four follow-ups hasn't been decided on yet. But stay tuned, and we'll let you know what the release dates for those are, just as soon as we can!
