Site News - Massive DiC Update!

Posted by David Lambert
2/01/2004

Back at the end of October I posted the Roundup of DiC Cartoons, and promised I'd get back to you with more information. Well, it's been a while and I've procrastinated quite a bit about this. So, my apologies about that, and here we are with a big update.

DiC has teamed up with UAV to distribute their DVDs to the world. UAV is struggling to get the product out there, with some of it now available at Amazon, and more to come. Wal-Mart and Best Buy are also carrying more and more of these titles, so look for them there. We owe our thanks to UAV's John Stewart for providing a wealth of information, and cover art. What we missed getting from UAV, we got from other websites or even from attentive TVShowsOnDVD readers. We'll thank them as we go.

So what do we have? Well, we have more details about 4 DiC T.V. Show on DVD releases from last fall, word about 4 more titles coming up at the end of this month (February), and info from a cartoon-centric website about what to expect in the wave after that. With no further delays, here is a title-by-title listing of each DiC release in the batch, and then the wrap-up of what's down-the-road later:

  • Sylvanian Families - The Big Adventure
    7 Episodes (Canadian TV Series)
    Coming On 2/24/04
Thanks to ToonZone.net & UAV for information about this release.

Also of interest, although not quite TV-on-DVD material, is the feature film Here Come The Littles and the direct-to-video item Old McDonald's Sing-a-Long Farm, both also getting DVD releases on Feb. 24th. Look for them as well.

Finally, ToonZone.net also has word for us about the future of DiC TV-on-DVD releases. Here's a quote from their article, courtesy of Craig Crumpton of ToonZone:
UAV will continue to distribute select Heathcliff titles throughout 2004, along with other DiC properties planned for DVD/VHS release, including The Care Bears, Sylvanian Families, The Littles, Sabrina: The Animated Series, Inspector Gadget, and Super Mario Bros.

But Craig didn't stop there! Knowing that Inspector Gadget has been represented on DVD before, in the form of a direct-to-video "Gadget Boy" release, Craig contacted UAV's John Stewart to inquire as to whether this will be more of the same. Stewart's response was "the Inspector Gadget release 'will be the original episodes.' " Good news, indeed! Stewart went on to mention to ToonZone that "We are currently discussing which episodes go on and in which order and what kind of bonus features will be available. As [for] our future Super Mario Bros release, it may be organized by original air date."

Continuing on that very subject: TVShowsOnDVD reader (and previous news contributor) Jared Martin wrote to us at the last minute before this story was published, to say that he'd exchanged e-mails with Stewart as well. About the in-airdate-order releases, Stewart said:
"We will start off with individual titles released gradually through the year (with five episodes per release) and then release the boxset at the end (you can wait to purchase the entire set or buy the last one that will come with the actual box). We want to start off with Inspector Gadget and Super Mario Bros Super Show."

My, my...how nice! So not only will DiC and UAV plan to bring out their biggest titles in airdate order, but we'll have two different ways to get slipcover boxes to store collections in. This is a fans' dream, and we congratulate and encourage them to move forward with these plans. Here at TVShowsOnDVD, rumors have reached us that Captain N: The Gamemaster could be in-the-works for DVD release. Dare we hope it would receive this level of treatment? I'd love it!

I'll give thanks once again to everyone who contributed information to this article. Stay tuned, everyone, and we'll hopefully keep you updated on a more timely basis from now on.
